Video comparison

Video comparison

This video is primarily narrative, it shows a average everyday guy play his heart out on the drums in really public location. He meets people along the way that confront him while he playing on the drums.

The video is in Grey scale meaning it use's black and white only. I'd like to include this in our video as i think it gives it a very rustic feeling, something that i would like to include and be a little more Indie. I very much like the contrasts of black and white because i think it shows good visual representation and it can help the audiences understand the music video more, the video starts in what we understand is morning and then moves onto the evening this shows time scale with the video.

Morning - showing a shot of the drummer.

Evening - Establishing shot at night time.

'A view from the afternoon' is set in an urban area, this is brilliant for the video as the concrete flats in the background work well with the grey scale colouring the language used in the music is very informal and relates with working class or youngsters in the north of England which is stereotyped in city's to be a what some people like to call 'concrete jungle' however our music video will be set on Seaford seafront for shots of the band so we wont have any musical instruments in urban areas.

It includes on main character throughout the video, this shows continuity however i personally prefer diversification across videos as it gives it more vibe and feeling it also shows more things going on therefore stimulates excitement, the song itself is upbeat so i would of liked to have seen more than just one theme.

The lyrics of the song talk about typical northern girls however the video shows one young guy playing the drums in flats, this is subtle story lining it'd like to include this in my narrative as well because it gives the video a sense of intelligence and it makes the audience search into the video therefore becoming passively interactive.

Dressing in the video is young and informal, the characters body language and hair cut is also informal, this will be the same in my music video. Dressing is important in Indie videos, because their ironic dress sense - as if they don't care about how they look is very iconic therefore it must be included in our video.

Mise-En-Scene

Setting and Location:

We will be using Seaford beach to film the band performing the song, throughout the video we will be cutting a lot back and forth to this to show the song being performed by what will be our interpretation of the 'Arctic Monkeys'.

For the narrative we will be filming along around our 'Sussex Downs College' as this is really easy to do for us, as in organization and we will be able to obtain all props and actors without lots of hassle, furthermore and more importantly our target audience is youths of 17 - 20 and thats the age range of the college. We will also use New haven beach and pier as this is very Indie like and would be ideal for the genre of music we are filming.

The setting is going to be kind of black and white beach / seaside towns. We will still try and capture a modern feel to the video however we want to play to the traditional Indie culture and keep it.

Costume and make up:

We will be using minimal make up for the band as we want to try and keep them all ladish like and normal, we're not trying to create a pop celebrity look, we just want to keep it as real as possible so that our target audience can relate.

The clothes worn by the majority of the actors will be every day to day clothing. They will be jeans and a t shirt or a jumper. We will want the band to look more like rock members and the narrative to look like average people. This will suit the Indie market.

Use Of Colour

The band will be filmed in the evening on the beach we will emphasize the sunset if we manage to get it and stay in theme with the colors of the sea and the pebbles the beach. We will want to capture a rustic luck as theres lots of cast iron pylons and boats on the beach. During the college setting it will be average lighting and outside it will be daylight so we will use this to our liking.

The band members will be wearing average colors but not so much so they blend into the background, enough to stand out from the others as well.

Props

Props will be a key part of the narrative as they will be used to help tell the story to the audience and used to keep the video constantly linked and intact with the song. I'll make sure we use things like work book's, cars, appropriate clothing.

When we cant film something narrative to the song we will use a prop to connect it together to the video of the Arctic Monkeys. For example the lyrics 'She wagged English and Science' we can use Science and English books.
