E-Mail

To start filming the music video and to get on i had to ask permission from the record label so that i do not breach any copyright laws. I E-mailed Richard Stone from EMI to ask for his permission. Here is a screenshot of the E-mail.

Presentation

I made a presentation to inform the record company on a basically overall view of the video, what i will be doing and how i will be doing it and importantly why i'm doing it. I included in the overview:

Who the Arctic Monkeys are
What do they represent
Who listens and likes them
What they wear and how they wear it
What music genre they are
Demographics
Psychographics
Comparisons

I informed them on what they music video is doing and where it is being done i had to chose whether i wanted to take the band into a new direction or not.

Here is the link to the presentation that i uploaded onto google docs:

Brainstorm

After comparing videos and identifiying my target audience, i feel its time i should start brainstorming ideas and start to think about what i'd like to include in my Arctic Monkey video.

Firstly i'd like to include different depth of field's in my shots, i have learnt alot about different focal lengths. A narrow depth of field will lead small areas around the shot frame blurry or out of focus and lead focus to one thing, in contrast a wide depth of field shot shows everything thats going on. I will use a wide depth of field with an establishing shot from high up and zoom into the band, hopefully this attract peoples attention and understand the location.

After looking at videos like Razorlights - The Golden Touch i have noticed how they make full use of the light available. My video is partly being shot on a beach so a lot of it is natural light i can use things like reflectors to get good light angles and show expressions and representations. The other half i will have to use lamps and artificial light, the more light i use the brighter it will look and give a happier sense of feeling.

Small ideas that i'd like to include intertwine with the lyrics of the song. For example it sings "He picks her up at the school gates" here i can literally show the 'bigger boy' picking up a girl at some school gates during mid day. Even though it seems like a very simplistic idea i think using props like this to show understanding will work well.

I will need to decide what time of day i will start filming because certain times of the day represent certain things. Night time might be bad or sinister things or it could mean times to party or go on a night out. Morning when its misty on the hills or when there is dew about on trees and school children going to school might represent a new begging or honesty. My video is upbeat so during mid day where there is full sun exposure and lots of things going on in the background that i could use would be best for my music video.

I have a large choice of friends and actors that i could use to perform the song. I need chose to the right people that give off the right representation and tick all the boxes. The bands clothing is important too what will i dress them in, what economic status does it flaunt and what the colours represent. I know my target audience now and i know what the Arctic Monkeys have worn in previous videos its important that i build upon this to show continuity.

Existing Digipaks

What is a digipak?
A digipak is the case in which the CD will be protected; it also offers another chance to promote the music video. It will be made out of card or paper and there will be another opportunity to link my video with the image found on the front of the video. I will need to link the image with my video to show continuity and allow people to relate the band and build the picture clearly. The entire promotional pack will involve posters, adverts for newspapers and the Internet and finally it will involve my digipak.

To understand digipaks I’m going to analyse two artists that are within the same genre because this will help me build my own and gain some common techniques, again I’m going to take the band in a different direction so I don’t want to build the same as others.

I can see the album cover is simple, very roomy and modern. It pictures the band members on the front playing their respective instruments with an amp, creating the image they are just in a normal practice session or just finding something to do. The shots in grey scale this is perhaps to show continuity with the videos they have featured on the album. The clothes worn in the shot are identified and matched with the music genre. The Artic Monkeys would wear something a little like it but its important to recongise that the two bands are from different areas in the UK so perhaps there may be a slightly different fashion sense. The camera shots bright and roomy possibly showing purity in the band, their young and honest alot of their songs are about girls and love. The miorror shows the drummer playing in the background, clever use of reflection. It is light against the wall and it gets darker as it spreads out, maybe showing that the band members are warm and bright, when making my video i need to utilise the day light and for the shots of the front cover and plan.

The main focus of the back of the album is the image, its a faded image slightly blurry. The image is similar to the image shown on the front cover of the album, its shot in the same location as it, with the white walls and the mirror in the background, the band are also playing their instruments again giving the relaxed just-band-practice appeal. The shot of the image is slightly zoomed out to get a bigger picture, this time including a drum (shown in the bottom left of the album cover). When compared we can see the front cover is prior to the band playing and the back cover is a shot of the band playing. We know this is the debut album so maybe its representing the launch of the band playing and at the back over the songs it the band playing, when staring at both images you can interpret them in lots of ways therefore being thought provocative, this has given me ideas about what i should be doing in my album cover and how the images should be taken. The bar code is positions in the top right so it doesn't over lay the guitarist's image. The red line down the side of the album makes it stand out from the other bland images, the same colours are used on the front as on the back. The style of font is modern yet readable however the size of the font is quiet small, so it doesn't overlay the image. I want to perhaps use something a bit brighter and bigger for the single cover so it stands out. The small print is just below the bar code in the same font, the design of the album is very centered around the image.

The CD is bold and bright this isn't just to help people find the cd when they drop it! We see the black and white font colours contrast the blood red back ground, in a big bold modern font. The cd use's the inner gap as a letter 'O' both clever and modern the font is built around it in size and stlye. The white letters titling the album are almost cut off, we can see read and understand what it says however its cut off in a carelss style, fitting of The Kooks font colour is white, seperating it from the black font above but also showing better on the red background. I'd like a bright CD to promote my video. I think it will make people more excited about playing it and the song itself is quiet upbeat and livley.

I took a screenshot of one of the hits of the album titled’You don’t love me’ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aqe1cap3gWo).

We can see the band again playing their instruments this time to a live audience inside a venue. The cameras in grey scale. The lighting is bright and the body language of the band is what would be expected when playing an upbeat song.

There was not many poster’s promoting the video but a common one that seemed to come up every time I searched for it was just a blown up poster of the album cover I think this can be effective because it starts to build a distinctive image of the band however I don’t think its very diverse and it might show the band to be bland and not very attractive. The poster I found is shown below.

Another band I found to be in the same genre and performing at gigs along side Arctic Monkeys is razor light I looked into promotional packs they have launched and digipaks.

This is Razorlights debut album titled ‘Razorlight up all night’ we can see its different from what I have planned for my video as there is 3 colours black, white and red it only shows a picture of the lead singer in a television, the hair of Razorlight is iconic and this is shown elsewhere in the bands promotion. It shows a retro style font titling the band and the name of the album. Its clean cut with square shapes and it shows photos of potential rockers and just general papers and suitcase tags possibly employing that the band is world wide and tourist like. There is a simple of a dark circle with a X cut into it perhaps showing a razor cutting a whole to let light through. This is shown on posters for the album too shown below.

The poster shows two members of the band, the guitarist and the lead singer and lead guitar. The lead guitarist is posing the same as he was in the album from cover just this time we can see his whole body. His side is performing a rock like pose, this as well as their clothing helps define the genre of the band. There is colour is eye catching bright yellow with black solutes inside it. Again we can see black and white but I’d like to perhaps use some colour in my poster because it looks a lot more pleasant and different from other ones.

This poster is just the band posing the poster showing 4 typical guys with the bands name above it. They are all wearing clothes you’d expect to see be worn by an American Indie band. It’s in black and white again typical of most of the posters I think to relate my band to this genre it will have to involve something black and white .

Flatplans

This is my first concept idea for the digipak that i will create for the Arctic Monkeys. The digipak design here is interesting and colourful with lots going on. I wanted to capture a fun styled as it can connect to my young target audience.

The front cover of the digipak will be a photo of the 4 band members i intend to use in my digipak. They will be wearing coloured jumpers and dressed accordingly. There is a slight blue tint behind the band members this will relate to my male audience and it also represents the sea that is found in the music video. The font is young and modern, but it is easy to read so people are not too confused.

For the CD cover and the other side of the CD cover i have used quite basic ideas. The CD slot and the CD cover are made of two different colours to avoid confusion. I have gone with a bright yellow CD with purple writing on the front. Yellow to me represents happiness and even though my music video and the song is quite sad i wanted the audience to feel happy when putting the Arctic Monkeys on. As for the picture opposite, it will be a close up shot of one of the band members, again much like the front cover on a blue tinted background.

The back cover is very funky and very colourful. I wanted to make it interesting although in refelection it might be hard to understand and read the background text so perhaps this is my biggest flaw with this digipak. I like the sharp zig zag lines because they stand out and i want my CD to stand out more than anyone elses. I have included a barcode on the back of the text and there is minimal text.

Idea two

The colour is this is a little more tamed and toned down. The main theme of the front cover in this digipak is the text. I have created a wave like gap in which i have placed 'Arctic' on the blue background which fades out. The 'Monkeys' is in the bottom right on a yellow background, firstly because it stands out and contrasts the blue, but more so because the colour didnt work well on hte pink background. In the top left there is the Bigger boys and stolen sweetshearts section. I will find a font for these on www.dafont.com. possibly 'Action of the time font' found below.

For the text saying 'Arctic Monkeys' bigger boys and stolen sweet hearts i will use a font called Masterplan. Again found with alot of my other fonts on www.Dafont.com.

I like this font because it is masculine and therefore fits in with my target audience being primarly male. Furthermore i think it gives a rough look, i'd like to use this font alot in my digipak and possibly my advert that i will talk about later because it represents a boyish feel and shows continuity if i use the same font.

Opposite the CD picture there is a picture of a character who is going to be playing the lead position and front man in the band, again the same colour background is used and the shot will be taken side onwards as it is more interesting and it works well as a side cover. To take this picture i will take a photo from the side and then photoshop out the character and place him on a colourful interesting background.

The CD cover its self has half a heart on it. This represents a broken heart. The background will be white because i think the red and white colours work together, especially when showing love as an emotion. The heart will be in half because it links in with the storyline of the music video. On the right side of the CD there will be text explaining the title of the song and the name of the band. As for the font here i will use a simple font that is easily readable, it will be in black because it contrasts the white. Here are some ideas:

I like the edgey slanted feel this gives, its cool and it almosts gives the impression that it could be leaning away from the broken heart.

Another font i would consider using is a font called 'Quadranta' its much more modern and crisp however i dont think it is as suitable for a rock / indie genre digipak, but i will use both and see which look best.

The backcover of the CD is wavey, i would use the same fonts as shown above for the back as i dont want to confuse the viewer, its important that i attract them to buy the digipak. The text will be in the top right corner displaying track numbers and track titles. In the bottom right there will be a bar code for legal reasons.

I have chose to create a wavey feel here from the bottom left to the top right, its modern and and colourful. It allows the backcover to be much more interesting. I wanted to use something different here because i have used alot of photos already in my media project. I have also placed a A and a M on either side of the wave because again this tags the band in the back picture and gives them more exposure.

Idea 3

The digipak is alot different from the rest because it contains more photos and less photoeditting.

The front cover shows the two characters from the music video who fight over the girl who is showin the middle. The Title is shown above the characters and the name of the band is written along the bottom. I will edit a blank background because i think simplicity looks best in this occasion. I have previously talked about the font 'Masterplan' and i would like to use it here on the front cover again. The clothing of the characters on the front cover of the digipak are young and associated with the genre of the Arctic Monkeys music.

As for the side cover it will be a simple photograph of the beach huts on Seaford Seafront, the location of alot of the music video. I had also talked about them when doing the research task and finding out infomation about my music video.

The CD itself is quite basic, its a red and white CD, the red again representing love and the white purity, both emotions found in the music video. The cd rests on a white background because it works well and fits in, furthermore it compliments the CD well and the front cover.

As for the back of this digipak there is a photo of a unmanned drum kit with the title of the band on the Tom tom drum. The shot shows the drum kit central and the name of the band is written again with a shaded background underneath it. Again i have included a bar code on the bottom.

Overall i like all 3 designs of my flatpacks i will try to stick by them as i create by digipak but naturally if i cant edit the image properly or ideas change due to external reasons such a as terrible weather not allowing us to take the photos of the beach huts in the third idea, then i will have to seek alternatives for them.

Analysis of other videos.

For this part of the course i have to pick two other music videos to analyse, the purpose is this is too see what is a common feature in other music videos that can relate it to its genre and what works well that i might like to include in my music video or what is unique and perhaps different equally it will show me things that i should avoid and allow me to take the band into new territory and down different paths.

For my first music video i decided to chose a band called 'Razorlight' a rock band formed of both English and Swedish members they have released 3 albums. I will review one of the songs from the debut album 'Up all night' called 'Golden Touch'.

Here is a YouTube link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arRHp5FTCak

The video starts out with a shot of the lead singer and rhythmic guitarist, Johney Borrell. They show this to start because his haircut and particular style has become iconic of the band its shown all over the posters and the cd covers to provoke interest and create attention. He is shown in a black silloute like edit with a background changing, probably to keep people interested and to contrast the black at the front.

As the song picks up in tempo and the more instruments are introduced we can start too see other members of the band. They are also shown as black silloute-like figures. One of the members closer to the camera is holding a camera and is almost taking shots of the audience.

The colour of the background starts to change we can see new colours introduced like blue and the white is more frequently used. The video also excretes new patterns becoming allot more hypnotic. Edits show the band members moving abouts primarily closer and further away from the camera.

There are lots of shots of the instruments that are being played, perhaps to show play styles and to keep relating the music video to its genre. I'd like to include this in my video.

The silloutes of the band are shown to almost fuzz alot and become static, kind of like what you would see on a 70's televison perhaps with this and the camera they are playing games with who is watching who. The patterns in the background and the colour schemes are also what i would expect to see in a 70's music video.

At 1:24 in timeline of the video it starts to play the chorus for the first time. The band members move about alot to create atmosphere. There is now a golden background which relates directly to the colour in the song name. The edits move with the beat to the song for example as the guitarest strums 3 times, 3 clones appear of the guitarest. More spirals and lagging clones appear later in the chorus again giving it a edgy and funky feel.

During the second verse there are shots of a television style camera its on a manikin of legs. This shows the band to be artistic but perhaps it maybe means that we are all kind of walking cameras to store videos and still images. It shows the band reading books, maybe because in society people prefer television of books this is the band being unique and different.

In the later leg of the video around the 2:50 area it becomes more and more funky with different coloured clones in a black background, theres also the introduction of the green colour. The shot rate of the video is faster and there are constant zoom ins and outs. The song itself is becoming louder and more settled, its repeating the chorus.

At the end of the video it starts to slow down allot like a typical outro would. A violin plays perhaps to zoom the viewer out of a day dream. The camera also zooms out to show the outline of a box, perhaps this was the television we were expecting?

Overall i thought the video itself was pretty fun to watch, it was lively and not boring. I'd like to include a few ideas that are promoted in the video such as the speed of editing and the shots of the band but the song itself is sending a different message than what i will be sending in mine.

The kooks - Naive

So for my second video, i chose to analyze a band called the Kooks. They are a Brighton band and we're formed near where i grew up. They became famous and active within the charts since 2006 with their first album Inside in / Inside out it got to '2' in the album charts. The Kooks have often played at gigs along side Arctic Monkeys and are within the same music genre, i will look at the video for the same reasons i looked at Razorlight, to get an insight on what really works and what perhaps didn't appeal so much or work well.

The song i will be analyzing is called Naive, it was released on their debut album. Here is a Youtube link to the music video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-KnNVoFsCc

The music video is introduced to us with one of the band members walking down the stairs with his hands in his pockets, promoting a casual body language. Again their hair is iconic and matches that which is in fashion of the music genre. The lighting is fairly bright to begin with until the youngster leaves the building onto the street.

The camera tends to follow the man and is introduced to his surroundings. The actor / band member doesn't make eye contact or addresses the audience viewing the video, he often has his back to the camera perhaps giving a careless approach.

It is located in a typical area, the props and house itself is pretty ordinary and affordable. It is located in a built up town area, we can see this from when he moves from the building he started in, into the other house with traffic showing in the back ground.

As the video plays on we are introduced to a narrative. There is a shot of a young girl looking urn-happy, she then stumbles out of her room over one of the other band members who was asleep in the doorway of the room on the floor, again a careless attitude. The lead singer enters a dark room, probably a club or a pub, there is little lighting to show his face, i'd like to make sure that in my video i include lots of lighting to make sure my viewers can understand and follow it without loosing the focus. He walks through the crowds, the crowd is young and mixed between male and female this is identifying their target audience. We then keep jumping back to the narrative, this is what i will be doing in my music video with the shot of the band playing and the narrative of the actors telling the story. In this case we can see a argument between the lead singer and the blonde girl who is likely to be his girlfriend.

We can see the girl vulnerable and drunk, the band member takes care of her in the video this might be relating to the lyrics perhaps she was too trust worthy? My music video will be constantly involved with the lyrics because it helps tell the story both visually and through listening to it.

Overall the video itself is just a big narrative short movie with short and slow edditing, i will be including this inter-linked with the band playing on Seaford beach. I think comparing music videos has helped me gain some tricks and tips which will be useful when filming.

Target Audience.

One of the methods i learnt at AS to identify a target audience was using magazine covers and looking at readerships to understand who buys the magazine, how old they are what gender they are and what they enjoy.

I researched magazine covers with the Arctic Monkeys and i found these magazine covers:

NME Magazine

Q Magazine

To understand who buys these magazines i went to www.NRS.co.uk, they provide estimates of the number and habits of people reading newspapers and magazines. The survey of June 08' to June 09', the most recent survey, i found the following figures:

Q Mag
666,000 copies sold in total, 14Th most popular monthly general magazine in the UK.
513,000 men
153,000 women
572,000 aged 15 - 44
94,000 45+

NME Magazine
388,000 copies sold in total, 16th most popular weekly general magazine in the UK.
296,000 men
91,000 women
339,000 aged 15 - 44
49,000 aged 45+

By looking at these figures we can see that it is probable the majority are male aged 15 - 44 however it is important to note theres still a big market for males aged 45+ and females of all ages, they shouldn't be neglected.

I can now find out the demographics of people, demographics are the statistical data of a population showing income. Here is a graph from the NRS website showing how they categorise people:

I will now look and record my findings on the demographics of the readership of both Q and NME magazines.

Q Magazine:
ABC1 - 250,000
C2DE - 137,000

NME Magazines:
ABC1 - 444,000
C2DE - 222,000

We can see that generally people who buy both magazines have a larger income and lots of disposable income. Usually people in higher ranks and important jobs are more mature and clever. However again i shouldn't forget about the smaller % of audience which would be in the lower bands of the demographic chart.

Reviews

After looking into magazine covers which gave me a rough picture of who my target audience is, i should now look into reviews from critics on previous songs and music videos this will help me again find out who buys and watches the video and how i should shape mine.

here is a review from the daily telegraph's website after reviewing the band at a concert, they are talking about the lead singer and song writer of the Arctic Monkey, Alex Turner.

"He has also traded the street-level observations of old for a prettier, more adult, cryptic style of wordplay."

This tells me the band is changing their direction and helps me identify the target audience, i now know that i need use crpytic messages in my video to relate to the newer wordplay and it needs to mature for adults to enjoy.

"Alex Turner’s crew have moved beyond the dispiriting arena of action and reaction, into a zone where they’re allowed to exist simply as an excellent band, guided by sure-footed artistic vision."

This quote shows Artic Monkeys need an artistic music video this is brilliant because i had, as shown in my planning section, artistic ideas to incorporate in my video such as greyscale editting and an array of camera shots.

Fans

Furthermore to understand the bands target audience i researched their fan base and go straight to the heart of what im looking for. Firstly i hit two popular social networking sites popular with all ages of people it will give me an un-biased account of the audience.

Here are screen shots of random fans from www.facebook.com\arcticmonkeys

and heres some from www.myspace.com/arcticmonkeys

from both photos is shows young fans, mostly male which fits in however i massive point i have found from looking at this, shows that fans are from all across the world not just sheffield or the UK. My music video has to attract the mass market and mass fan base of the Arctic Monkeys. I can now start to build a target audience with the evidance i have obtained but finally just to make sure im appealing to right market i will look at the Arctic Monkeys website, ArcticMonkeys.com.

There is continuity shown between the Myspace page and their home page, same colours and graphics shown. They are shown in black and white again working well with my gray scale. The colours are bold they are not faded and they're curvy and modern, young audiences would like this. On the website it shows photos of the band playing live at concerts the audiences in the crowd look modern and young proberly of the same age as the majority of the readership of the magazines i researched earlier on the in page. It backs up from what i found when i looked at the networking sites as it shows the band are playing concerts across the world and at large venues that are sold out quickly everywhere, this shows mass appeal and i will need to relate to this in my music video.

Video comparison

Video comparison

This video is primarily narrative, it shows a average everyday guy play his heart out on the drums in really public location. He meets people along the way that confront him while he playing on the drums.

The video is in Grey scale meaning it use's black and white only. I'd like to include this in our video as i think it gives it a very rustic feeling, something that i would like to include and be a little more Indie. I very much like the contrasts of black and white because i think it shows good visual representation and it can help the audiences understand the music video more, the video starts in what we understand is morning and then moves onto the evening this shows time scale with the video.

Morning - showing a shot of the drummer.

Evening - Establishing shot at night time.

'A view from the afternoon' is set in an urban area, this is brilliant for the video as the concrete flats in the background work well with the grey scale colouring the language used in the music is very informal and relates with working class or youngsters in the north of England which is stereotyped in city's to be a what some people like to call 'concrete jungle' however our music video will be set on Seaford seafront for shots of the band so we wont have any musical instruments in urban areas.

It includes on main character throughout the video, this shows continuity however i personally prefer diversification across videos as it gives it more vibe and feeling it also shows more things going on therefore stimulates excitement, the song itself is upbeat so i would of liked to have seen more than just one theme.

The lyrics of the song talk about typical northern girls however the video shows one young guy playing the drums in flats, this is subtle story lining it'd like to include this in my narrative as well because it gives the video a sense of intelligence and it makes the audience search into the video therefore becoming passively interactive.

Dressing in the video is young and informal, the characters body language and hair cut is also informal, this will be the same in my music video. Dressing is important in Indie videos, because their ironic dress sense - as if they don't care about how they look is very iconic therefore it must be included in our video.

Mise-En-Scene

Setting and Location:

We will be using Seaford beach to film the band performing the song, throughout the video we will be cutting a lot back and forth to this to show the song being performed by what will be our interpretation of the 'Arctic Monkeys'.

For the narrative we will be filming along around our 'Sussex Downs College' as this is really easy to do for us, as in organization and we will be able to obtain all props and actors without lots of hassle, furthermore and more importantly our target audience is youths of 17 - 20 and thats the age range of the college. We will also use New haven beach and pier as this is very Indie like and would be ideal for the genre of music we are filming.

The setting is going to be kind of black and white beach / seaside towns. We will still try and capture a modern feel to the video however we want to play to the traditional Indie culture and keep it.

Costume and make up:

We will be using minimal make up for the band as we want to try and keep them all ladish like and normal, we're not trying to create a pop celebrity look, we just want to keep it as real as possible so that our target audience can relate.

The clothes worn by the majority of the actors will be every day to day clothing. They will be jeans and a t shirt or a jumper. We will want the band to look more like rock members and the narrative to look like average people. This will suit the Indie market.

Use Of Colour

The band will be filmed in the evening on the beach we will emphasize the sunset if we manage to get it and stay in theme with the colors of the sea and the pebbles the beach. We will want to capture a rustic luck as theres lots of cast iron pylons and boats on the beach. During the college setting it will be average lighting and outside it will be daylight so we will use this to our liking.

The band members will be wearing average colors but not so much so they blend into the background, enough to stand out from the others as well.

Props

Props will be a key part of the narrative as they will be used to help tell the story to the audience and used to keep the video constantly linked and intact with the song. I'll make sure we use things like work book's, cars, appropriate clothing.

When we cant film something narrative to the song we will use a prop to connect it together to the video of the Arctic Monkeys. For example the lyrics 'She wagged English and Science' we can use Science and English books.

Planning

I have chosen for my A-level Media studies to create a music video over the song 'Bigger Boys And Stolen Sweethearts'.

We chose this song amongst others for a number of reasons, firstly we all wanted to do a song by this Artist but as they were signed on a major label with a number of successful hits it helped us limit our options to a handful of songs.

The lyrics in the song are very informal and almost talk to the audience, this would suite us well as we can already get a picture of what our video will be like and be able to promote this onto the audience. The lyrics are also very young and modern, people of our age can understand this so we won't have any troubles expressing certain moods and feelings were as we would of if perhaps we were to do a much already video.

The band i have chosen are very established, they're liked by many including us and we as youths can usually relate to a lot of their music which would be another important factor upon our choice of this video.

Furthermore the song is the right length for us to make a video, we don't want something that lasts forever as we wouldn't be able to keep in the story properly equally in contrast we don't want something too short as we wouldn't be able to express ourselves properly

Arctic Monkeys are from England so again we would be able to produce a suitable music video for our coursework without needing to adjust local surroundings too much.

Lyrics

Lyrics to Bigger Boys And Stolen Sweethearts :
There's always somebody taller
With more of a wit
And he's equipped to enthrall her
And her friends think he's fit
And you just can't measure up no
You don't have a prayer
Wishing that you had made the most of her
When she was there
They've got engaged
No intention of a wedding
He's pinched your bird
And he'd probably kick your head in

Bigger Boys and Stolen Sweethearts
You're better off without her anyway
You said you wasn't sad to see her go
Oh no

He might be one of those boys
That's all pretty and vain
Likes to go in the sunbed
stays out of the rain
So that he don't get his hair wet
cos You wouldn't want that
At least he hasn't got a Nova
Or a Burberry hat

They've got engaged
No intention of a wedding
He's pinched your bird
And he'd probably kick your head in

Bigger Boys and Stolen Sweethearts
oh You're better off without her anyway
You said you wasn't sad to see her go
Of but of course you were

Have you heard what she's been doing?
Never did it for me
He picks her up at the school gates
At twenty past three
She's been with all the boys
But never went very far
and She wagged English and Science
Just to go in his car

They've got engaged
No intention of a wedding
He's pinched my bird
And he'd probably kick my head in, oh
Now the girls have grown
But I'm sure that they still carry on in similar ways

Bigger Boys and Stolen Sweethearts
So I'm better off without her anyway
I said I wasn't sad to see her go
But I'm only pretending, you know
Yeah, I'm only pretending, you know
Yeah, I'm only pretending, you know
Oh I'm only pretending, you know

Inspirations

The theme for my video has been inspired by a lot of music videos produced for the Indie genre, even more specifically for the British artists in the Indie genre. Artists such as:

Jamie T

The Kooks

Bloc party

They're videos are all usually upbeat, loud and directed towards the younger generations. Each band or artist usually has a band or at least a guitar in the video at some point just too inform the audience of which genre they are and what they stand for.

What roles will i play in the music video.
I will be playing the role of an extra in the music video if needed. Mike the other member of the duo will also be used as a extra.

We will be directing the video making sure its up to a good quality standard, we will use college cameras to film the video as well and will film both the narrative and the band on location.

It is important that we film the band in the right ways to ultimatley frame the band in the right representation.

In my Media lessons i have learnt correct Media terminology that i should be using.

Genre - The classification of any media text into a category or type.

Representation - The process by which an image etc may be used to represent/stand for someone or something.

Discourse - The expression of ideologies or speech used to achieve social, personal or political power.

Media Institution – The operation of a large media corporation embracing production, distribution and consumption

Mis-en-scene – Everything that is put in a TV studio or film set

Narrative - The way in which a plot or story is told, by whom and in what order.

Form – The structure or skeleton of a text

Ideology - A system of beliefs/values, which can be identified in mass media products or texts.

Denotation - The common sense, obvious meaning of something.

Connotation - Associations triggered by eg. an image or an object.

Storyboard

Here is my storyboard for my Music Video. I will follow this and use it as a guide for the video to give me a rough idea of how the video will turn out and what type of shots i should be taking and where. It will allow me to look ahead into the future and plan my time carefully so that i can balance time between editting the music video, making it and evaulating it as iam aware that adding effects and cutting the video will take time too.

The drawings are fairly simple. There are 24 scenes in the music video and it should fit in time with the music video which should be between 2 minutes 50 seconds and 3 minutes.

I have included a varity of shots too keep the music video interesting, i want to entertain the audience. I have used a mixture of close up shots and long range shots. The close up shots i have used represent emotion and the long distance shots establish the scene and the area, it also creates a bigger picture effect that i could work with in effects. I will use zooms to move between close range and further distance shots. I have used a point of view shot (PoV) to show expresions of the actors within the music video. This will help to explain the storyline and hidden messages that i would like to include within the Music Video.

The music video includes half narrative and half of the band playing, i will cut to the band playing at the chorus. This shows continuity with other Arctic Monkey music videos.

I will need to cut between the band and narrative at a fast pace because the song itself is quite upbeast and loud. For it to make sense and to fit in with the Indie music genre, i will need to keep the pace of the cutting in context with the pace of the song itself. For this i might need to speed the video up in parts or equally slow it down, this can all be done on effects.
